Shirley Edward Overstreet
Life: Sunrise: December 27, 1916 ~
Sunset: July 8, 2004
Funeral Services: July 15, 2004, Calvary
Baptist Church
Officiated By: Pastor W. James Smith
Internment: Greenwood Memorial Park, San

Obituary
Rev. John and Sister Annie B. Overstreet were blessed
during the Christmas Season in Wiggins, Mississippi on a chilly December 27,
1916
with
their sixth child. They named their baby boy, Shirley Edward. Life was
filled with joy and excitement for Shirley, as he had joined a very close
family. Shirley often shared stories of his vivid childhood memories growing
up with this sibling, Virgil, David, Katie, Irma, Grace, Louise, Floriece
and Bessie.
Shirley was instructed from birth in christian principles and living a
God-fearing life. At an early age he accepted Christ and was baptized at the
Bethlehem Baptist Church in Wiggins. When he made San Diego his home, he
continued to keep Christ as the center of his life and became a disciple of
the Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. N. E. Taylor.
Calvary continues to be his home church. In every way, Shirley fulfilled his
duty as the spiritual leader of his family. To the Calvary family, he was
called "Mr. Parking" because of his loyalty and dedication to the Parking
Lot Ministry.
Shirley was a remarkable person and a true gentleman. He was soft spoken,
but firm in his beliefs and convictions. His greatest passion was to keep
his audience entertained. He was known for his debonair style of dress. This
showed him to be self-confident, warm and friendly to all of the people he
met, regardless of socio-economic status.
Shirley's work ethic exceeded most standards. He was faithful, loyal and
timely. He was an emlopyee of U. S. National Bank until it dissolved, then
he remained in the building and continued employment with Security Pacific
Bank from which he retired. His hobby, which eventually became a part time
job, was gardening. "Overstreet and Sons" are given credit for some of the
more manicured lawns in San Diego.
His family was the center of his life. He spent as many hours as necessary
attending and participating in the activities of his children. Shirley gave
sacrificially in order that his family could receive some of the better
things that life had to offer.
On July 8, 2004, after eighty-seven years, God called his son, Shirley
Edward Overstreet home. Shirley's love and legacy will continue thorough
those who remain: a loving wife of fifty-three years, Minnie Simmons
Overstreet; children, Shirley Murrell, Eric (Stephanie), Bryant (Theresa)
and Carleton Overstreet all of San Diego, California; four sisters, Grace
Franklin of Hollingsdale, Mississippi, Louise Overstreet, Floriece Henderson
and Bessie Chestang (Samuel) of San Diego, California; twelve grandchildren;
four great-grand children; extended family of daughters, Tina Southern
Logan, Elaine Ford Richardson, Patricia Jackson Overstreet and Andrea Dixon
Overstreet; a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends who shared pleasant
memories of the life of Shirley Overstreet.
