Deaconess

The Deaconess Ministry of the Calvary Baptist Church was established on April 3, 1930.

The original charter indicated that the Deaconess Ministry would consist of wives of the Deacons and any other devout sisters of the church whom the church may elect. It also directed this ministry to be associated with the Deacons in the care of the poor, sick, etc. and in the preparation of the Lord’s Supper and to have charge of the female candidates for baptism. It also allowed them to elect their own chairman.

The Deaconess Ministry provides many services to the membership. These include: Set up and clean up of the Lord's Supper elements and utensils; Organize and initiate Lord's Supper Outreach Ministry, Maintain Lord's Supper utensils and supplies, replacing as needed; Help to dress women candidates for baptism; Maintenance and Washing of baptismal clothes for men and women candidates; Visit and Communicate with the Sick & Shut In; Prepare food for bereaved families; Represent Calvary at funerals for membership in churches and Funeral Homes, Accompany the Pastor and Church on outgoing engagements.

Maintain Lord's Supper elements which includes the purchase of unleavened crackers and grape juice for this service. In addition, tablecloths (2) for the Lord's Supper need replacing. Additional gowns need to be made for baptismal candidates. Gowns are made by the Deaconess, so there is no cost associated.

The Lord's Supper Outreach Ministry reaches more than just members of Calvary. It is a form of evangelism to those non members in convalescent homes and caretakers of homebound members who may not be saved.

This Ministry is very valuable to the membership. Since Baptism and the Lord's Supper are the two main ordinances of the Baptist Church, someone or some group would have to continue to provide this service.

The President of the Deaconess Ministry is Sister Roselyn Hebert

Outreach Ministry

The Outreach Ministry of the Calvary Baptist Church - San Diego actively witnesses to those who are lost and unsaved. Our mission is to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to our homes, communities and the world at large. This ministry is led by Sister Ellie Smith. This ministry is an extension of our individual outreach activities and enables the members of Calvary to do community outreach each month. Members gather on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month to reach out to lost and un-churched in the city of San Diego.

Armor Bearers

The Pastor's Aid ministry lovingly serves our Pastor and first family through prayers, financial support and encouraging words and deeds. Its mission is to edify the shepherd which God has placed over the Calvary Baptist Church family. This ministry teaches the biblical principles of loving and caring for the Pastor as God has instructed His church to do.

Scholarship Ministry

The Scholarship Ministry provides financial support to Calvary Baptist Church members in support of educational advancement and career development. It also provides Educational Advisement services as well as Career and Financial Aid Planning assistance. This ministry seeks to reach individuals preparing to enter college or vocational school. We host annual training sessions for young people in an effort to help them select and prepare for college and their future careers.

The Scholarship Ministry was established in 1991 under the leadership of Reverend S.M. Lockridge and Reverend Michael Atkins. Under the leadership of Pastor W. James Smith, Calvary committed to setting aside a portion of all offerings for the “Calvary Baptist Church Scholarship” Fund.

This ministry is under the leadership of Sister Cheryl Oliver.

Women Missionary Union

The Women Missionary Union (WMU) of the Calvary Baptist Church - San Diego, is an organization for women, girls and boys. It includes the Women Missionary Auxiliaries (Junior & Senior Women, Starlight Band, Girls Auxiliary and the Young Women Auxiliary).

The mission of the WMU is closely linked to the great commission Jesus gave his disciples on the mountain. In accepting Christ's challenge to "Go into all the world", it is essential to organize in order to do that work. The WMU is the way in which churches organize women, girls and boys to perform the mission tasks the church has been given.

Functions of the Women Missionary Union

bulletTeach Missions
bulletEngage in Mission activities and direct Evangelism
bulletSupport Missions
bulletProvide and interpret information regarding the work of the church and denomination.

These are the four WMU functions which are grouped together to encompass our Mission Program.

Why Have Missionary Unions?

bulletJesus commanded that missionary work be done throughout the world.
bulletOrganizations get work done more quickly and cover larger territories.
bulletOrganizations represent opportunities to discover leadership and talent, and to develop both.
bulletThe world needs evangelism and Christian civilization, and this cannot be accomplished by individuals alone, but through intelligent consecrated cooperation of Christian believers.
bulletAn active missionary organization offers many opportunities for enlightenment, the enlisting of sympathy and the attainment of the objectives of the Christian church.
bulletThrough the work and study of a Missionary Society, men, women and children come to know Jesus as their Savior, through whom revelation must come of the kingdom of God.

Reasons for Contributing to the Missionary Projects

bulletEarly Christians were missionaries, else Christianity would have been confined to Palestine.
bulletEarly missionaries Christianized Anglo-Saxons, else we would be heathens today.
bulletThe price already paid to establish a world-wide Christian kingdom is so large that we cannot afford to default now.
bulletIf we do not Christianize other nations, they will heathenize us. We must either Christianize them or continue to fight them.
bulletWe would be disloyal to those of our own number, whom we have sent out, if we did not support the cause.
bulletThe privileges and liberties we enjoy now as a race, have come to us through the spreading of the teachings of Christ, and further privileges and liberties would be impossible, without the continued spreading of Christianity.
bulletThe results of the past justifies our giving.
bulletThe missionary spirit is a vital principle of the law of life. We grow only by giving. Only missionary churches are growing.
bulletOur Lord commanded it, "Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel". He would not have commanded us to carry on a program without supporting it financially.

Why Should You Belong to a Missionary Society?

Christ's last command to His disciples was to "Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to everyone". Again He said, "He that hath my commandments and keeps them, it is he that loves me". The Society is a definite place for showing love through obedience to Christ's command. Obedience is Christ's one test of discipleship.

The Missionary Society is in keeping with God's plan to give each disciple a part in saving the world. He died for the world, and no disciple through idleness, should keep back a part of that great price.

The Society gives individuals an opportunity to pray with others for the spread of God's kingdom, "Pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest" said Christ, "that he would send forth laborers". And again He said, "if any two of you shall agree on earth as touching, anything they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father in heaven." He loved the world, for which He tells His disciples to pray. He loved it enough to die for it.

The Missionary Society not only prays for the spread of God's kingdom, but it studies the various missions fields and thus teaches its members how God's work is prospering. God's disciples love to see His hand in the world's affairs.

Power Partners Ministry

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)

“Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.”

Ephesians 5:20-21 (KJV)

The Calvary Baptist Church Power Partners Ministry is married couples seeking to please God in the way we love Him, love each other and our families. We look to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior as our heavenly model and our Pastor and First Lady as our earthly example of how to love in spirit and in deed. We acknowledge that the adversary is seeking to destroy the family but also know that our Father holds all power! Hallelujah!

The Power Partners ministry is led by Brother Ronald and Sister Victoria Lawson

The Brotherhood Ministry is comprised of all men of the Church, crossing all socio-economical, ethnical, chronological boundaries. The most resounding and significant desire that joins their hearts is:
WINNING THE LOST TO CHRIST.
